Children Under the Age of 13
For children under the age of 13 who wish to participate in an event at, conducted by, or sponsored by an institution of the University System of New Hampshire (USNH), a parent or legal guardian must complete the registration process and provide the required information and consent on the child’s behalf.
USNH complies with the requirements of the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and the USNH Privacy Policy. This notice describes USNH practices regarding the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information from and about children under the age of 13 in connection with USNH-administered programs and activities.
If you have questions about these practices, you may contact USNH Legal Counsel at legal@usnh.edu. For additional information about COPPA and children’s online privacy rights, please consult the Federal Trade Commission’s COPPA resources on the FTC’s website. The USNH Privacy Policy is available at: https://www.usnh.edu/policy/usy/viii-cybersecurity-policies-and-standards/privacy-policy.
USNH institutions include the University of New Hampshire, Plymouth State University, and Keene State College.
Parent/Guardian Consent
USNH shall not collect information from or about a child under the age of 13 unless USNH has received verified parental consent.
A parent or legal guardian may grant verified parental consent by providing one of the following, in the parent’s or guardian’s own name:
- a credit card for payment
- a check for payment
- a signed statement of consent
Revoking Consent and Deleting Information
At any time, a parent or legal guardian may revoke consent and direct USNH to delete their child’s personal information from USNH online data storage. If consent is revoked, the child may no longer be able to participate in the event or activity.
If a parent or legal guardian requests deletion of a child’s personal information, USNH will not use that information for any purpose except as required by applicable laws or regulations.
To revoke consent or request deletion, a parent or legal guardian must provide the event name, event sponsor, and the confirmation number received during registration, and contact Enterprise Technology and Services (ET&S) at https://www.usnh.edu/need-help.
Information We Collect
USNH may collect personal information from or about a child under the age of 13 in connection with registration for and participation in USNH-administered events or activities. The information collected generally includes the child’s name, email address, street address, and date of birth, which may be used to ensure enrollment in age-appropriate activities.
Depending on the nature of the event or activity, a parent or legal guardian may be asked to provide additional information about the child. USNH does not require a child or parent to provide more personal information than is reasonably necessary for the child to participate in the event or activity.
How We Use the Information
USNH uses personal information collected from or about a child under the age of 13 to register the child for participation in USNH-administered events or activities and to help ensure appropriate content and safety for participants.
USNH does not disclose a child’s personal information to third parties without parental authorization, except as required by applicable laws or regulations.
