Project Mentor Survey Pilot, Spring 2006
Methodology and Summary Results

University of New Hampshire (UNH) Durham students in three Project Mentor course sections were surveyed during the week of April 17, 2006. Fifty-six mentor surveys were distributed, of which 46 were completed and returned, for a response rate of 82%.

Fifty-six mentee surveys were distributed during April and May 2006. A total of 39 mentee surveys were completed and returned, for a response rate of 64%.

Results were generally positive, with a high level of satisfaction expressed by both mentors and mentees.

Mentor Results

Mentors (n = 46)

Profile:

  • From 18 undergraduate majors
  • 46% seniors
  • 35% juniors
  • 19% sophomores
  • 7 from families in which neither parent had a college education
  • Mentored in 9 different middle schools

Results:

  • 67% noticed a positive change in the mentee’s attitude toward school
  • 76% noticed a positive change in the mentee’s feelings about him-/her-self
  • 60% reported a positive change in the mentee’s expectation that he/she will graduate from high school
  • 49% reported a positive change in the mentee’s expectation that he/she will graduate from college
  • Overall, 93% of the mentors were very satisfied with their experiences; of these, 40% rated their experiences “awesome”

Mentee Results

Mentees (n = 39)

Profile:

  • From 4 middle schools in seacoast area
  • 46% sixth graders
  • 21% seventh graders
  • 33% eighth graders
  • 6 from families in which neither parent had a college education

Results:

  • 77% of mentees said they discussed future aspirations with their mentor
  • Positive changes reported by mentees include
    • Attitude towards schoolwork
    • Awareness of the broader world around them
    • Relationships with peers
    • Expectations they would graduate from both high school and college
  • 74% favorably changed their expectations about graduating from both high school and college
  • 74% said it was important that their mentor had talked to them about completing high school
  • 87% were very satisfied with their experiences; of these, 68% rated their experiences “awesome”
